Llancloudy Maverick will be standing at stud in North Devon.
Llancloudy Maverick was our first and only hand rear to date, very sadly 6 hours after his birth, Marlas had complications and prolapsed, the veterinary in attendance did everything possible to save her, but sadly it was not possible.
Llancloudy Maverick was bottle fed for approximately 6 weeks. He was walked out 2 or 3 times every day to stretch his limbs and eventually at one week old, his full sister Llancloudy Marti and his cousin Llancloudy Daisy were introduced to him and both being yearlings at the time, this would give him the much need equine company and both girls would eventually teach him the ropes of being a pony. This worked exceptionally well until a time when a friend of ours telephoned us to say his new born foal had died that morning and would we like to borrow his mare. We jumped at the chance and by 11am the following morning, this huge 15.3hh trotting mare arrived with her dead foal. The foal was skinned and placed onto Maverick and the mare was lightly sedated. Carefully and all of us holding our breath, we introduced Maverick to his surrogate mother.
It was an instant success and Maverick as bright as a button never forgot where to find the teat. Very greedily he sucked the bags dry. They were to be kept stabled for at least 24 hours and monitored regularly.
Within 48 hours, Maverick and his surrogate mother were turned out to grass, the skin was removed and all I can say is, it was success. However, we did run into a couple of problems and thankfully only minor. Maverick was used to being bottle fed and being handled by us humans the bond was that strong, he found it very confusing that I would not feed him when I went out to inspect them and a couple of times he actually tried to kick the mare, thankfully this lovely mare was the perfect mother and was one of the kindest mares I’ve encountered.
Within a couple of days it was decided that Maverick should go back to our friend’s yard and stay there until weaning. So the day came that both were loaded onto the lorry. We kept in touch and made sure all was going according to plan, and on more than one occasion our friend took some ribbing over the fact this little tiny wee colt foal was running out with a huge trotting mare.
Eventually she would go back to stud to be re-covered and whilst there, Maverick made plenty of friends, one being the veterinary in attendance, who I must say constantly telephoned me to make purchase of Maverick.
Upon weaning, a very close friend of mine and one that has a number of my ponies made purchase of him. He had found that special home I was seeking. He lives with two fell pony cousins, Llancloudy Leviathan and Llancloudy Cosmos, Blue the big coloured cob gelding who really does keep him in his place, one donkey who is 37 years young and fell pony yearling.
Nearly three years on and Maverick is a bouncing licensed fell pony stallion. His nature is a testament to his dam Marlas and his surrogate mother. He is the kindest, sweetest pony you could wish to meet; he has the mental attributes of an old wise horse.
Maverick has attended a very, very small number of shows to date and has always been in the ribbons. Last year Llancloudy Maverick actually took his first Championship and it came with a lovely Cup too.
He has now started his long lining training and been put into harness and we find him to be an exceptionally bright pony, taking everything in his stride, his willingness to please is phenomenal, he is as steady as a rock in every situation he is put to.
